A component of the trap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A plumbing trap is simply a section of pipe that has been designed to trap liquid in order to prevent sewer gas from flowing out of the system. That\u2019s about all you would need to know about plumbing traps, if you’re not a plumber. Indeed, that knowledge would be enough in order to call a plumber to inform them a trap is\u00a0leaking and request services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When installing plumbing systems, though, it\u2019s important to be able to break down a trap into its components. One of those components is the trap weir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trap weir<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Refer to the above picture. Liquid will drain from the inlet down into the trap, which is shaped like a U. When enough liquid is in the trap, it becomes full and creates a seal as shown. Once more liquid goes down the drain, it will push the standing liquid currently in the drain up towards the outlet and down into the larger drain system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, each time a fixture is used, the traps are filled with newer liquid, which prevents stagnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weir of the trap is the point on the outlet side of the trap where water will begin to overflow and spill out of the trap and down the drain. Essentially, it\u2019s the bend in the 90 of the trap outlet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why it’s important to know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As a plumber, it\u2019s essential to know this term and be able to identify it physically in order to do your job correctly. Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider the following from the section on trap requirements in Chapter 10 of the International Plumbing Code (IPC):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1002.1 Fixture traps.<\/strong> Each plumbing fixture shall be separately trapped by a liquid-seal trap, except as otherwise permitted by this code. The vertical distance from the fixture outlet to the trap weir shall not exceed 24 inches (610mm)<\/strong>, and the horizontal distance shall not exceed 30 inches (610mm) measured from the centerline of the fixture outlet to the centerline of the inlet of the trap. [emphasis mine]1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re installing a plumbing system in the crawlspace of a home, being able to identify the weir of the trap is essential, basic knowledge. Some crawlspaces are big, and you may have a lot of room to work in, but you need to understand the parameters in which you can actually operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s use a master shower drain as an example and consider roughing in the drain from underneath the residence inside the crawlspace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shower base is sitting above you in the house, and the drain outlet is stubbed into the crawlspace. You haven’t installed the trap yet, but your drain branch is run over to this point, and you’re ready to glue the trap 90 onto it. Once you\u2019ve glued the trap 90 onto your drain, you\u2019ve glued on the weir, essentially. From that bottom or low point of the outlet on that trap 90, that bottom or low point being the weir, to the fixture outlet (a shower drain, in this case) shall not exceed 24 inches, according to the IPC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you have the exact<\/em> meaning of that code and how to apply it practically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take one more example, from the IPC regarding venting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

909.1 Distance of trap from vent.<\/strong> Each fixture trap shall have a protecting vent located so that the slope and the developed length<\/em> in the fixture drain<\/em> from the trap weir to the vent fitting are within the requirements set forth in Table 909.1.2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding what the trap weir is in a plumbing trap is understanding where measurements begin and end. This is critical in installing proper vent systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These are easy, simple things – and essential to get right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further, craftsmanship is in these smaller details. Perhaps the unfortunate thing about plumbing is that craftsmanship is out of sight and out of mind, if it is done well. And that\u2019s alright. In some fields, pride comes from what\u2019s noticed. In plumbing, pride comes from what\u2019s unnoticed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One can find joy and meaning in the thought of a family\u2019s new home for Christmas not having any holiday nightmares come up, because you’ve done your job correctly, and it’s been done well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, I’ll leave you with a quote from Walter Isaacson’s biography on Steve Jobs about craftsmanship that I find helpful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Job’s father once taught him that a drive for perfection meant caring about the craftsmanship even of the parts unseen.”3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
